What was Jesus’ hometown during his childhood, according to Matthew and Luke?

The story behind the answer

According to Matthew and Luke, Jesus’ childhood hometown was Nazareth.

Luke says Joseph and Mary returned to Nazareth after the events surrounding Jesus’ birth, and Jesus grew up there. Matthew says the family settled in Nazareth after returning from Egypt. The town was in Galilee, north of Judea, and it became closely associated with Jesus’ identity.

This explains the frequent New Testament designation “Jesus of Nazareth.” It should not be confused with Bethlehem, which Matthew and Luke name as Jesus’ birthplace, or Capernaum, which became an important center during his public ministry.

Nazareth’s role also appears in the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ visit to its synagogue. The narratives report that some local people questioned his authority because they knew him as a member of their own community. The town therefore functions both as his home and as a setting for local resistance.
