Answer
Turning water into wine
Jesus’ first recorded miracle in the Gospel of John is turning water into wine at the wedding at Cana.
John 2 places the event at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. When the wine runs out, Jesus’ mother tells him about the problem. Jesus instructs servants to fill six stone water jars, and the water becomes wine. The master of the feast tastes it without knowing where it came from and remarks that the better wine has been kept until later.
John calls this event the first of Jesus’ signs. In John, miracles are often presented as signs because they reveal something about Jesus’ identity and mission, not merely as displays of supernatural power. The story also introduces the disciples’ growing belief in him.
This account differs from the Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, which do not narrate the wedding at Cana. It should also not be confused with later Gospel stories involving bread, water, or wine. John’s narrative specifically identifies the transformation at Cana as the beginning of Jesus’ signs.
