What was Jane Austen's father's profession?

Jane Austen's father, George Austen, was a clergyman of the Church of England. He served as rector of Deane and Steventon in Hampshire, positions that shaped the family's connection to the church and to the educated professional class.

George Austen studied at St John's College, Oxford, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1751 and later receiving a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Divinity. In 1764, his uncle helped him acquire the living at Deane. He later obtained the living at Steventon, where he and Cassandra Leigh raised their children, including Jane Austen.

George retired from the Steventon living around the end of 1800, when the position was transferred to his son James. He then moved with his wife and daughters Cassandra and Jane to Bath. His clerical career also connected the Austen family to a broad network of clergy, scholars, and landowners, a social world that appears frequently in Jane Austen's novels. He died in Bath in 1805.
