Answer

What was Hokusai's birth name before he became an artist? Tokitarō.
Tokitarō was Hokusai's childhood name before he entered the professional world of ukiyo-e. He was born in Edo, now Tokyo, in 1760, and grew up in an artisan environment connected with mirror making. Historical accounts differ over aspects of his parentage and adoption, but Tokitarō is the name most commonly given for his early life.
As a young man, he was also known as Tetsuzō. Around the age of 14 or 15, he worked in a bookshop and later trained in a woodblock-carving workshop. He entered the Katsukawa school in the late 1770s and adopted the artist name Katsukawa Shunrō, beginning a career built around constant artistic reinvention.
Hokusai later used names including Sōri, Taito, and Manji, as well as Hokusai itself. Katsushika refers to the area of Edo associated with his origins, while Hokusai means “North Studio.” The common mistake is to treat Tetsuzō as his birth name; it was a later personal name, whereas Tokitarō is the childhood name used in biographical references.
