Which museum in Tokyo dedicated to Hokusai holds a copy of The Great Wave off Kanagawa?
Answer
Sumida Hokusai Museum
Answer
Sumida Hokusai Museum
The Sumida Hokusai Museum in Tokyo holds a copy of Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
The print, whose formal title is Under the Wave off Kanagawa, was published around 1830–1832 as part of Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The series ultimately contained 46 designs, and The Great Wave became its most famous image. It shows three boats dwarfed by a towering blue wave, with Mount Fuji visible in the distance.
The museum opened in 2016 in Sumida Ward, an area strongly associated with Hokusai, who lived there for much of his life. Its collection includes paintings, sketches, prints, and objects connected with the artist. The museum has displayed a high-definition replica and has also exhibited original impressions on a rotating basis.
A common mix-up is treating “the original” as a single unique object. The Great Wave is a woodblock print, so many impressions were produced from the same blocks. Museums around the world hold different impressions, while Sumida’s Hokusai focus makes it the natural answer to this question.
