What was Google's first Nexus smartphone?

The story behind the answer

What was Google's first Nexus smartphone? Google’s first Nexus smartphone was the Nexus One.

Designed by Google and manufactured by HTC, the Nexus One became available in January 2010. It served as a reference device for Android, giving Google a way to showcase new software and sell a phone directly to consumers through an online store.

The phone launched with Android 2.1, known as Eclair, and featured a 3.7-inch display, a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 5-megapixel camera, GPS, and a trackball. It was sold SIM-unlocked in several markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong.

Readers often confuse the Nexus One with later models. The Nexus S, made by Samsung, followed in December 2010, while the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 arrived later. The Nexus One’s successor was the Nexus S, and the original device was discontinued in 2010 after Google’s web-sales strategy struggled to attract a broad mainstream audience.
