What was Georgia O'Keeffe's painting Jimson Weed sold for at auction in 2014?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's painting Jimson Weed sold for $44.4 million at auction in 2014.

The full title is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1, a 1932 painting of a large white jimson weed flower. Sotheby’s sold it in New York on November 20, 2014, for $44.405 million, including the buyer’s premium.

The sale set a record for the highest price paid at auction for a work by a female artist at that time. The buyer was the American philanthropist Alice Walton, who placed the painting in the collection of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

O'Keeffe painted flowers on a dramatically enlarged scale, encouraging viewers to examine forms that might otherwise be overlooked. The work is often confused with her other flower paintings because she produced many similarly magnified botanical subjects.
