What was Georgia O'Keeffe's first solo exhibition in New York held at?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's first solo exhibition in New York was held at the 291 gallery in 1917.

The gallery was operated by Alfred Stieglitz at 291 Fifth Avenue and was formally associated with his Photo-Secession circle. Stieglitz had seen O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings in 1916 and exhibited them without her initial permission, then presented her first solo show there the following year.

The 1917 exhibition was important because it introduced New York audiences to a young artist whose work was already moving away from conventional academic representation. O'Keeffe was then teaching in Texas and had only recently begun making the abstract drawings that brought her to Stieglitz's attention.

The gallery is sometimes confused with the Armory Show, the major 1913 exhibition that introduced many European modernists to American audiences. O'Keeffe did not hold her first solo New York show at the Armory Show; it was at Stieglitz's 291.
