What was Georgia O'Keeffe's first New Mexico home called?
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Ghost Ranch was Georgia O'Keeffe's first New Mexico home.
O'Keeffe began staying at Ghost Ranch in 1934 after discovering the dramatic landscape near Abiquiu. The ranch is known for its multicolored cliffs, mesas, and expansive views. Its geology and intense light provided subjects for many of her paintings.
She maintained a small house at Ghost Ranch and used it as a base for working in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe often walked through the surrounding landscape, collecting bones and studying rock formations. The ranch's cliffs appear in paintings such as Red and Yellow Cliffs and related landscape works.
Ghost Ranch was not her only New Mexico residence. In 1945, O'Keeffe purchased a historic adobe house in Abiquiu, restored it, and later made it her primary home. The two locations are sometimes mixed up because both were essential to her New Mexico period. Ghost Ranch is farther north, while Abiquiu is a separate community and residence.
