Abiquiú house
Answer
Abiquiú house
Georgia O'Keeffe's first New Mexico home was the house in Abiquiú that she bought in 1945.
O'Keeffe had been visiting New Mexico since 1929 and became deeply attached to its landscapes, architecture, bones, and distinctive light. For many years she stayed at the Mabel Dodge Luhan house in Taos or at Ghost Ranch, which was then associated with Arthur Newton Pack. In 1945, she purchased a neglected adobe compound in the village of Abiquiú.
The Abiquiú property required extensive restoration. O'Keeffe worked with Juan Hamilton to repair and adapt the house, which included a famous courtyard wall and a black door. The house and its surrounding forms became recurring subjects in her paintings and photographs.
Ghost Ranch was another important O'Keeffe location, but it was not the property she bought in 1945. She later maintained homes in both Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch and spent her final years in Santa Fe. The distinction matters because the two northern New Mexico places are closely linked with her mature work.
