The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York organized a major O'Keeffe retrospective in 1970. By then, she had already spent more than five decades developing a distinctive body of work that included abstractions, flowers, New York architecture, animal bones, and New Mexico landscapes.

The exhibition helped confirm her importance within the history of American art at a time when her reputation was being reconsidered by a new generation of artists and scholars. O'Keeffe continued working after 1970, but age-related vision problems eventually limited her painting. She died in Santa Fe in 1986.

This exhibition should not be confused with her 1946 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, which was the first retrospective there devoted to a woman artist. The Whitney event was later and represented a broad overview of her career in a different institutional setting.
