What was Georgia O'Keeffe’s birthplace?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe was born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

The artist was born in 1887 on a farm near the small city of Sun Prairie, in Dane County. Her parents, Francis Calyxtus O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe, operated the farm, and Georgia grew up there with six siblings.

Sun Prairie is often replaced incorrectly by Madison in short biographies because Madison is the nearby state capital and the larger regional city. O'Keeffe’s birthplace was not New Mexico, although New Mexico later became the setting most strongly associated with her mature work.

Her Wisconsin childhood preceded study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York. Those early training years came long before her later reputation as a leading American modernist.
