What was C.S. Lewis’s Oxford college before he moved to Cambridge?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis was a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, Oxford, before moving to Cambridge.

Lewis held an Oxford fellowship and teaching position at Magdalen College from 1925 until 1954. The college became the setting for much of his academic career and for his friendships with writers and scholars, including J.R.R. Tolkien.

In 1954, Lewis became the first holder of the newly established chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The Oxford and Cambridge colleges have nearly identical names, which causes frequent confusion: Lewis’s Oxford college was Magdalen, while his Cambridge college was Magdalene, with a final e.

Lewis continued living and writing in Oxford for much of his life even after taking the Cambridge chair. His academic move therefore changed his university appointment without erasing his strong association with Oxford.
