What was C.S. Lewis’s full birth name?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s full birth name was Clive Staples Lewis.

He was born in Belfast, Ireland, on 29 November 1898. “C.S.” was formed from his first and middle initials, rather than being a pen name or an abbreviation of a longer literary title. His family and friends sometimes used “Jack,” a nickname he adopted in childhood after the death of his dog, Jacksie.

Lewis later became one of the twentieth century’s best-known Christian writers, literary scholars, and authors of imaginative fiction. His published works include The Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, and The Four Loves. The name “C.S. Lewis” is therefore much more familiar internationally than his birth name, but the initials are directly derived from Clive Staples Lewis.
