What was C.S. Lewis’s final Narnia book?

The story behind the answer

The Last Battle was C.S. Lewis’s final Narnia book. Published in 1956, it concludes the seven-volume Chronicles of Narnia and won the Carnegie Medal for children’s literature in 1957.

The story centers on the final crisis in Narnia, where deception, political manipulation, and false religious claims threaten the kingdom. Characters including King Tirian, Jill Pole, and Eustace Scrubb become involved in the conflict.

Although it was published last, The Last Battle is not the final book in the internal chronological order used by every edition. The series’ numbering has varied: some editions follow publication order, while others place The Magician’s Nephew first because its events occur at the beginning of Narnia’s history.

The novel’s ending presents a larger, renewed Narnia and has prompted considerable discussion about Lewis’s themes of judgment, hope, and the relationship between the fictional world and Christian belief.
