Chris Rock’s 1996 HBO stand-up special was titled Bring the Pain.
The special was filmed at the Takoma Theatre in Washington, D.C., and became a major turning point in Rock’s career. Its tightly structured observations about race, relationships, politics, and popular culture helped establish him as one of the leading stand-up comedians of the 1990s.
Bring the Pain also received major television recognition. Rock won two Primetime Emmy Awards connected with the special, including awards for his writing and performance. Viewers sometimes confuse it with Bigger & Blacker, his 1999 special, or Never Scared, released in 2004. The 1996 program is especially remembered for routines involving racial identity and Rock’s commentary on public figures of the era.
