Answer
Personal aide to the president
Charlie Young’s original White House job was personal aide to the president.
Charlie is introduced in “A Proportional Response,” the third episode of *The West Wing*. He initially applies for a part-time position as a messenger, but White House personnel officer Deborah De LaGuardia recommends him to Josh Lyman for the president’s personal-aide job. Charlie then becomes one of President Josiah Bartlet’s most trusted staff members.
The role is sometimes described informally as the president’s “body man.” It places Charlie close to Bartlet during meetings, travel, crises, and ceremonial duties, while also allowing the series to develop their unusually warm, almost father-and-son relationship. Charlie’s loyalty and discretion make him much more than a simple errand runner.
Dulé Hill played Charlie throughout the series. The character later changes jobs after graduating from Georgetown: C. J. Cregg hires him as a special aide to the chief of staff. That later position should not be confused with his original role. Charlie’s background also includes supporting his younger sister after their mother, a Washington, D.C., police officer, is killed in the line of duty.
