Answer
Alice's Adventures Under Ground
Answer
Alice's Adventures Under Ground
Carroll’s handwritten manuscript for Alice Liddell was titled Alice’s Adventures Under Ground.
The story began with tales Charles Lutwidge Dodgson—better known as Lewis Carroll—told Alice Liddell and her sisters during a boating trip near Oxford on 4 July 1862. Alice asked him to write the story down, and he eventually produced a handwritten, illustrated manuscript for her.
Carroll gave Alice the manuscript in November 1864 as a Christmas gift commemorating the summer day on which the story originated. It was much shorter than the later commercial book and contained Carroll’s own drawings.
For publication, Carroll expanded and retitled the work Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. John Tenniel supplied the famous illustrations for the 1865 edition. The manuscript title is therefore not a competing title for the finished novel, but the name of its earlier form. The manuscript is now held by the British Library.
