The Teenagers
Answer
The Teenagers
Bob Marley’s first recording group, formed in 1963, was called The Teenagers.
The group included Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer, along with other early members. After recording and releasing music, the group’s name changed to the Wailing Wailers and eventually to the Wailers. This early formation became the foundation of one of reggae’s most important bands.
The trio recorded “Simmer Down” in 1963, with production by Clement “Coxsone” Dodd. The song became a major Jamaican hit and helped establish Marley as a significant young performer. At that stage, the group’s sound was closer to Jamaican ska than the slower reggae style that later made Marley internationally famous.
The Teenagers should not be confused with the I Threes, the female backing-vocal trio formed much later with Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths. The Upsetters were associated with producer Lee “Scratch” Perry rather than being Marley’s original group.
