What was Bob Marley’s birth name?

The story behind the answer

Bob Marley’s birth name was Nesta Robert Marley.

He was born on 6 February 1945 in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. His mother was Cedella Booker, a young Jamaican woman, and his father was Norval Sinclair Marley, a British-Jamaican military officer. Marley was later widely known by the shorter name Robert Nesta Marley.

Some biographies reverse the two given names because he became famous as Robert Nesta Marley. However, the commonly documented birth name is Nesta Robert Marley. His mixed family background and rural Jamaican upbringing became important parts of the story surrounding his later music and public identity.
