Beyoncé’s first film role was Carmen Brown in the 2001 musical comedy Carmen: A Hip Hopera.
Carmen: A Hip Hopera is an MTV television film directed by Robert Townsend. It updates Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen to a contemporary American setting and mixes the original story with hip-hop, R&B, and spoken dialogue. Beyoncé plays Carmen Brown, a performer whose relationships and ambitions drive the plot.
The film aired in May 2001 and arrived before Beyoncé’s best-known theatrical roles. It showed her acting and singing in the same production, an approach that later appeared in projects such as Dreamgirls and Cadillac Records.
Carmen Brown is often confused with Deena Jones, the fictional singer Beyoncé played in Dreamgirls, or Foxxy Cleopatra, her character in Austin Powers in Goldmember. Nala is another common mix-up because Beyoncé voiced that character in the 2019 animated remake of The Lion King. Carmen: A Hip Hopera remains an early screen credit from the beginning of her transition beyond music.
