Lemonade was Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about a Black woman’s emotional journey.
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade combines music with a 65-minute film directed by Beyoncé and several collaborators. Its themes include betrayal, grief, anger, reconciliation, family and Black womanhood. The project draws on poetry by Warsan Shire and incorporates imagery connected to African American history and culture.
The album includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom” and “All Night.” It features guest artists including Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake and The Weeknd. Lemonade was released through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records.
The project received widespread critical acclaim and earned nine Grammy nominations. It won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 59th Grammy Awards. Lemonade is not the same project as The Lion King: The Gift, Beyoncé’s 2019 companion album inspired by the 2019 film.
