Badminton was commonly called Poona in British India before the modern name became established.
The name came from the city of Poona, now generally known as Pune, where British military officers played a form of the game during the nineteenth century. The game was influenced by older shuttlecock-and-racket activities, including battledore and shuttlecock.
The modern name came from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the country estate of the Duke of Beaufort. The sport was played there in the 1870s, helping the name spread in Britain. Poona therefore describes an important stage in badminton's development, not the name of a separate modern sport.
