Alphabet’s original corporate name before the 2015 company reorganization was Google.
In 2015, Google’s founders reorganized the business under a new holding company called Alphabet Inc. Google became Alphabet’s largest subsidiary, continuing to operate its search engine, advertising platforms, Android system, YouTube, and other major products.
The restructuring separated Google’s core internet businesses from several other ventures, including life-science and investment projects. Larry Page became Alphabet’s chief executive, while Sundar Pichai became Google’s CEO. Pichai later became Alphabet’s CEO in 2019.
Alphabet is not simply a renamed search engine. Google remains a subsidiary, while Alphabet is the parent corporation whose businesses and investments extend beyond Google’s original web-search operations.
