Alphabet was called Google before the 2015 corporate restructuring.
Google announced Alphabet on August 10, 2015, creating a holding company for Google and several other businesses. The restructuring took effect on October 2, 2015, when Alphabet became the publicly traded parent company.
Under the new structure, Google retained its core internet businesses, including search, advertising, Maps, YouTube, and Android. Other projects could operate more independently, giving investors and managers a clearer view of the different businesses.
Larry Page became Alphabet's chief executive and Sergey Brin became its president at the reorganization. Sundar Pichai became Google's chief executive in 2015 and later succeeded Page as Alphabet's CEO in 2019.
