The villain group that 12-year-old Gru auditions for in Minions: The Rise of Gru is the Vicious 6.
The Vicious 6 are a team of supervillains led by Belle Bottom after they betray their former leader, Wild Knuckles. Gru dreams of joining them because he wants to become a famous villain, but the group dismisses him as an inexperienced child. In response, he steals the Zodiac Stone during his failed audition, immediately making himself their enemy.
The Vicious 6 are not the same as the Anti-Villain League, which appears elsewhere in the Despicable Me series as an organization that fights criminals. The group also should not be confused with the villains in Despicable Me 3 or the villain team from the later Despicable Me films. The name is a direct reference to the team’s six original members and their supervillain identity.
The film serves as an origin story for Gru, showing how his early failure with the Vicious 6 helps shape the independent villain he later becomes.
