Answer
A sparse, partially hairless coat
The Lykoi cat breed is known for a sparse, partially hairless coat that creates its werewolf-like appearance.
The Lykoi’s coat is unusual because the cats lack an undercoat and have reduced hair coverage around the face, eyes, nose and ears. Individual hairs can also be absent or fragile, producing the characteristic dark, patchy appearance. The amount of hair can vary, and some Lykoi may lose much of their coat and later regrow it.
The breed was developed from naturally occurring mutations in domestic cats rather than from a cross with an actual wild canid or wolf. Breeders began formal development in the United States in the early 2000s, with the aim of preserving the distinctive mutation and establishing a healthy breed.
Although the Lykoi looks dramatic, its coat is not the result of a disease deliberately produced in breeding. Genetic testing and veterinary evaluation have been important in distinguishing the Lykoi mutation from unrelated skin and hair disorders.
