2026 Hall of Fame referee Joey Crawford wore uniform number 17 as an NBA official.
Crawford worked NBA games from 1977 through 2016, making him one of the league’s most recognizable referees. His official’s uniform number was part of his on-court identity during a 39-year career.
He became known for a highly demonstrative style, frequent technical fouls, and a willingness to enforce rules strictly. That reputation made him a familiar figure to several generations of NBA fans.
The number 17 should not be confused with a player’s jersey number or Crawford’s referee seniority. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class.
