What type of vehicle is Pixar's Cars character Luigi?

The story behind the answer

Luigi is a Fiat 500 in Pixar's Cars films.

Luigi owns Luigi's Casa Della Tires in Radiator Springs and is one of the town's most enthusiastic residents. His Italian identity, tire-shop business, and admiration for Ferrari racing form a recurring part of his character. Luigi is particularly excited when Ferrari race cars visit Radiator Springs near the end of the original Cars.

The character's compact shape and rounded body are based on the classic Fiat 500, an Italian city car introduced in 1957. Pixar used distinctive real-world vehicle designs to give the Cars cast recognizable national and historical identities, while the characters themselves remain fictional talking automobiles.

Luigi is voiced by Tony Shalhoub. His assistant and friend Guido is a small forklift who understands little spoken English but communicates clearly through actions. Luigi and Guido return in Cars 2 and Cars 3, continuing to operate their tire shop and support McQueen's racing career.
