Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 painting Jimson Weed shows a flower.
The work, also known as Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1, presents a large white jimson weed flower against a pale background. O'Keeffe frequently enlarged flowers so viewers had to confront their structure, curves, folds, and tonal changes rather than glance at them as small garden details.
Jimson Weed became especially famous after it sold at auction for $44.4 million in 2014, setting a record for the highest price paid for a painting by a female artist at that time. The title identifies the plant, while the subtitle distinguishes this particular white-flower painting from O'Keeffe’s many other botanical works.
