What type of satellite is Saturn’s moon Pandora because it helps shape the planet’s F ring?

The story behind the answer

Saturn’s moon Pandora is a shepherd satellite because it helps shape the planet’s F ring.

A shepherd satellite is a small moon whose gravitational influence confines, organizes, or disturbs material in a planetary ring. Pandora occupies the outer side of Saturn’s narrow F ring, while Prometheus orbits on the inner side. Together, the two moons interact gravitationally with the ring particles.

These interactions do not make the ring a perfectly smooth band. Instead, they can produce braided strands, kinks, channels, and short-lived structures. Voyager imaging provided important early evidence of this active relationship, and later observations showed that the F ring can change on relatively short timescales.

“Moon” and “shepherd satellite” describe different things. Moon identifies Pandora as a natural satellite of Saturn; shepherd satellite describes its dynamical role. It is also not the same object as Saturn’s larger moon Titan.
