What type of Pokémon is Pikachu?
Answer
Electric
Answer
Electric
Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon. Its yellow body, red cheek sacs, and lightning-bolt tail visually reinforce its association with electricity.
In the original Pokémon games, Pikachu can use electric attacks and is especially effective against Water- and Flying-type Pokémon. Electric moves are generally ineffective against Ground-type Pokémon, which gives Pikachu a clear strategic weakness. Pikachu evolves into Raichu when exposed to a Thunder Stone.
Pikachu was not one of the three starter choices in Pokémon Red and Green. The player instead selected Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Pikachu became the central mascot of the animated series, where it travels with Ash, helping make the species the franchise's most recognizable character.
The species was created by Atsuko Nishida and its final artwork was completed by Ken Sugimori. Pikachu's type is sometimes mistaken because its appearance resembles a small mammal rather than a traditional elemental creature, but the games consistently classify it as Electric.
