What type of gear inspired the double-chevron emblem of Citroën?
Answer
Chevron gears
Answer
Chevron gears
Chevron gears inspired the double-chevron emblem of Citroën.
Before founding the automobile company, André-Gustave Citroën became interested in a distinctive type of gear with V-shaped teeth. He acquired rights to manufacture such gears and used the double-chevron pattern as a visual symbol for his early industrial business.
The chevrons were not originally a decorative reference to roads, arrows or military rank. They represented the interlocking V-shaped teeth of the gears, which could operate more smoothly and quietly than some earlier designs.
When Citroën entered automobile manufacturing in 1919, the double chevron remained as the company badge. The mark changed in color, proportion and surrounding shape over the decades, but its mechanical origin stayed tied to Citroën’s pre-automotive engineering work.
