What type of flower did Georgia O'Keeffe paint in her famous 1932 work Jimson Weed?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe’s 1932 painting Jimson Weed depicts a datura flower.

Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 shows a large white datura blossom against a pale background. The plant is also known as jimson weed, angel’s trumpet, or sacred datura, although those names can refer to related plants or different common-name traditions.

O'Keeffe frequently enlarged flowers so that viewers had to look closely at their shapes, folds, and tonal transitions. She rejected the idea that her flower paintings should be reduced to symbolic interpretations, emphasizing instead that magnification encouraged people to notice flowers.

The painting became especially notable after its sale at auction in 2014 for $44.4 million, then a record price for a work by a female artist. That sale figure is separate from the painting’s creation date and from the botanical identification of its subject.
