What type of engine did the Ford Model T have?

The Ford Model T had an inline four-cylinder engine.

Its front-mounted engine displaced 177 cubic inches (2.9 liters) and used a side-valve, or flathead, layout. All four cylinders were cast together in a single iron engine block, a monobloc design that helped Ford manufacture engines efficiently and consistently.

The Model T’s engine was deliberately simple and durable rather than technologically extravagant. It could tolerate relatively poor-quality fuel, and its thermosiphon cooling system circulated coolant without the water pump used by the earliest examples. The engine shared lubrication with the car’s planetary transmission.

A common mix-up is calling it a V4 or confusing it with later Ford engines. The Model T was not a V-engine: its four cylinders were arranged in one straight row. It produced about 20 horsepower and remained in production for replacement, industrial, marine, and other uses until 1941, long after Model T car production ended.
