A Mass often precedes a traditional Catholic quinceañera celebration.
This church service is commonly called a Misa de Acción de Gracias, or “Thanksgiving Mass.” During it, the celebrant may give thanks for her life and ask for guidance as she enters a new stage. The family may also participate through readings, offerings, or other roles approved by the parish.
Not every quinceañera includes a Mass. The practice depends on the family’s faith, local customs, parish rules, and whether the celebrant is Catholic. Some families hold a nonreligious ceremony, a service in another Christian tradition, or only a reception.
A quinceañera Mass should not be confused with Confirmation or Baptism. Those are separate sacraments in Catholic practice. The quinceañera service is a thanksgiving observance connected to the birthday, not a sacrament created specifically for turning 15.
