What type of animal is Sven in Disney’s Frozen?

Sven is a reindeer in Disney’s Frozen.

Sven is Kristoff’s loyal animal companion and helps pull Kristoff’s sled across the snowy landscape. Although Sven does not speak in the films, Kristoff often interprets his sounds and treats him as a trusted friend. Their relationship provides both comic moments and emotional support during Anna’s journey.

The character’s design draws on the real appearance of reindeer, including antlers, a broad muzzle, and adaptations suited to cold environments. In North America, reindeer are also called caribou, but the films consistently identify Sven as a reindeer.

A frequent mistake is calling Sven a moose because of his large antlers or an elk because of his size. He is neither. Sven is a domesticated-style reindeer who lives with Kristoff, and he later appears with him in Frozen II and the short films.
