What type of animal is Sonic?

Sonic is a hedgehog, specifically an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog created as Sega’s mascot. His defining traits—spiky quills, extraordinary running speed, and the ability to curl into a ball—are built around a stylized version of hedgehog imagery.

Sega developed Sonic in response to Nintendo’s Mario. Designer Naoto Ohshima created the character, while programmer Yuji Naka helped establish the fast movement and looping levels that became central to the series. Sonic first appeared as a cameo in the 1990 arcade game Rad Mobile before starring in Sonic the Hedgehog for the Genesis in 1991.

A common mix-up involves other animal characters in the franchise. Knuckles is an echidna, Tails is a two-tailed fox, and Amy Rose is also a hedgehog. Sonic’s species is not an armadillo or an echidna, although early development explored several different animal concepts before Sega settled on the hedgehog design. In the games, Sonic is also often called the world’s fastest hedgehog, and collecting the Chaos Emeralds allows him to become the more powerful golden form known as Super Sonic.
