What two-word service system did McDonald's introduce in 1948?

The story behind the answer

McDonald's introduced the Speedee Service System in 1948.

Richard and Maurice McDonald created the system when they redesigned their San Bernardino, California, restaurant around speed, consistency, and low prices. They reduced the menu, prepared food in an assembly-line arrangement, and used standardized portions and procedures.

The system helped establish the operating model later associated with modern fast food. Customers ordered at a counter rather than receiving traditional carhop service, and the kitchen was organized to produce hamburgers and fries quickly.

The name came from Speedee, an early McDonald's mascot. Speedee was a chef-like character with a hamburger-shaped head and represented the restaurant's emphasis on rapid service. The system predates Ray Kroc's involvement with the company, although Kroc later expanded the model through franchising.
