What two golden structures inspired McDonald’s most famous logo symbol?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s famous logo symbol was inspired by the golden arches built into the architecture of its restaurants.

Architect Stanley Clark Meston designed the distinctive arches for the McDonald brothers’ restaurant buildings in the 1950s. The arches were intended to make the drive-in restaurants visible from the road and give them a memorable architectural identity.

As McDonald’s expanded, the physical arches became more important as a recognizable brand mark. In 1962, designer Jim Schindler combined the two arches into the stylized letter M used in the company’s logo.

The name “Golden Arches” therefore refers both to the original architectural features and to the later graphic symbol. The logo is not derived from fries, buns, or another menu item, although those products became closely associated with the brand.
