The main setting of Super Mario Sunshine is the tropical island of Isle Delfino.

Mario visits Isle Delfino with Princess Peach, Toadsworth, and several Toads expecting a holiday. Instead, they find the island covered in paint-like graffiti and goop. Mario is blamed for the damage and ordered to clean the island while investigating the real culprit, a character called Shadow Mario.

Isle Delfino is more than a single beach. It includes Delfino Plaza, the central hub, along with distinct locations such as Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor, Gelato Beach, Pinna Park, Noki Bay, and Corona Mountain. These areas give the island a varied tropical identity while connecting the game’s exploration and story missions.

Mario uses F.L.U.D.D., a water-powered device created by Professor E. Gadd, to wash away the pollution and reach elevated platforms. The island’s Shine Sprites provide its central source of power and become the game’s main collectible. A common mix-up is choosing Dinosaur Land, which belongs to Super Mario World, or Lavalava Island, which is from Paper Mario. Isle Delfino is specific to Super Mario Sunshine.
