What trophy is awarded to the Wimbledon ladies' singles champion?

The story behind the answer

The trophy awarded to the Wimbledon ladies' singles champion is the Venus Rosewater Dish.

The dish was first presented in 1886, when Blanche Bingley won it. It is a partially gilded sterling-silver salver made by Elkington & Co. of Birmingham. Its design is based on a Renaissance platter associated with Caspar Enderlein and is decorated with detailed classical and foliate ornament.

Despite its name, the Venus Rosewater Dish is not a conventional cup. A rosewater dish was originally a ceremonial basin used to catch rosewater poured over the hands. The trophy is about 18¾ inches (47.6 centimetres) in diameter and was valued at 50 guineas when commissioned.

A common mix-up is the Wimbledon men's trophy: the men's singles champion receives the Challenge Cup. The Venus Rosewater Dish is specifically for women's singles, while Wimbledon also awards separate trophies for doubles and mixed doubles.
