What trophy does the winner of a top-division professional sumo tournament receive?

The story behind the answer

The winner of a top-division professional sumo tournament receives the Emperor’s Cup.

The Emperor’s Cup is the principal championship trophy awarded at each of Japan’s six official grand sumo tournaments. It is presented to the wrestler who finishes with the best record in the makuuchi division, usually after a 15-bout tournament.

If wrestlers share the best record, a playoff determines the champion. The winner also receives prize money and several additional awards, including special prizes for eligible wrestlers and trophies from sponsors or public bodies.

The Emperor’s Cup should not be confused with the smaller trophies and monetary prizes presented after the championship. Winning a tournament is also distinct from promotion: a wrestler’s rank depends on broader performance across tournaments and the requirements of the Sumo Association.
