What tree species is famous for living thousands of years in Great Basin National Park?

The story behind the answer

The Great Basin bristlecone pine is famous for living thousands of years in Great Basin National Park.

These trees grow in the park’s high-elevation mountains, especially around Wheeler Peak. They survive in thin, rocky soils, intense winds, low temperatures, and limited moisture. Their slow growth and resin-rich wood help them resist insects, fungi, and decay.

Bristlecone pines often appear twisted and partly dead, but living strips beneath the bark can continue carrying water and nutrients. This unusual growth pattern allows a tree to survive even after much of its trunk has died. Individual trees can be several thousand years old.

The famous tree Methuselah is a bristlecone pine, but it grows in California’s Inyo National Forest rather than Great Basin National Park. Great Basin protects the species and ancient groves, while Methuselah’s exact location is kept confidential to reduce the risk of damage.
