What tree species includes Hyperion, the tallest known living tree?

The story behind the answer

Hyperion, the tallest known living tree, belongs to the coast redwood species, Sequoia sempervirens.

Coast redwoods grow naturally along a foggy strip of coastal California and southern Oregon. Their great height is supported by abundant moisture, mild temperatures, deep soils, and fog that reduces water loss. Hyperion rises more than 115 meters, placing it above every other reliably measured living tree.

Hyperion was discovered in Redwood National Park in 2006 by naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor. Its height was verified using laser measurements and a tape-drop method. The tree is estimated to be several centuries old and stands in a remote area whose exact location is kept secret to protect its habitat.

The species is often confused with the giant sequoia, which is generally shorter but much more massive. Hyperion is also not a Douglas fir or Sitka spruce; those species can be exceptionally tall, but the height record belongs to this coast redwood.
