What traveling exhibit train toured the United States during the 1975–1976 Bicentennial?

The story behind the answer

The American Freedom Train toured the United States during the 1975–1976 Bicentennial.

The train was a traveling museum created to celebrate the nation’s 200th anniversary. Its 26 cars carried historic objects and cultural exhibits, allowing communities across the country to experience a national commemoration without traveling to a single exposition.

The train began its tour in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 1, 1975, and continued through December 31, 1976. It visited all 48 contiguous states, stopping in cities across different regions and attracting more than 7 million visitors.

Three famous steam locomotives powered different sections of the journey: Reading Company No. 2101, Southern Pacific No. 4449, and Texas & Pacific No. 610. Diesel locomotives were also used on some routes where track conditions or operating requirements made steam power impractical.
