What title does Gandalf use after returning in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Gandalf returns as Gandalf the White in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Gandalf the Grey confronts the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm in Moria and falls into the depths with it. After defeating the Balrog, he is sent back to Middle-earth with greater authority and appears in Fangorn Forest to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli as Gandalf the White.

The new color represents more than a change of clothing. Gandalf explains that he is now what Saruman should have been: a chief servant of the powers opposing Sauron. His role becomes more openly commanding during the War of the Ring.

Readers sometimes treat Gandalf the White as a completely different character. Tolkien presents him as the same Maia, but transformed and returned with increased power and a renewed mission.
