What title did J.K. Rowling use for the US edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?

The story behind the answer

The US edition of J.K. Rowling’s first novel was titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The British original was published as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1997. For the American market, Scholastic changed “Philosopher” to “Sorcerer” before publication in 1998. The alteration reflected concerns that younger US readers might find “philosopher” less immediately connected with magic.

The story, characters, chapters, and plot remain the same in the two editions, apart from some vocabulary and editorial changes between British and American English. The differing title is why the first Harry Potter book can appear to have two names. Later books generally retained the same titles in both markets.
