What three ovals make up the Toyota emblem?

The story behind the answer

The Toyota emblem consists of two perpendicular ovals inside one larger oval.

Toyota introduced its current emblem in 1989 to mark the company’s fiftieth anniversary. The design contains three overlapping ovals. The two inner ovals represent the hearts of the customer and the company, while their overlap expresses a mutually beneficial relationship. Together they also form a stylized “T,” making the badge identifiable even without the word Toyota.

The surrounding oval is intended to represent the global embrace of Toyota and the world around the company. Toyota also explains that the shapes can be read as letters from its name and as a symbolic connection between the company and its customers.

Because the emblem is drawn with continuous curves, some viewers describe it simply as three rings. Its official visual structure, however, is one large oval containing two perpendicular inner ovals.
