What term describes the political and religious conspiracy that Bonfire Night commemorates?
Answer
The Gunpowder Plot
Answer
The Gunpowder Plot
The Gunpowder Plot is the political and religious conspiracy that Bonfire Night commemorates.
The plot was a failed attempt by English Catholics to assassinate King James I and destroy the House of Lords during the state opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605. The conspirators hoped to end Protestant rule and establish a Catholic-led succession.
The name refers to the gunpowder stored beneath Parliament. Guy Fawkes was discovered guarding the explosives, but Robert Catesby was the main organiser. The conspiracy involved more than the men initially recruited in London; a wider network of Catholic sympathisers became associated with it.
Other English conspiracies have similar names, which can cause confusion. The Rye House Plot of 1683 and the Popish Plot of 1678 were separate events. Bonfire Night specifically commemorates the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, not every alleged Catholic conspiracy in English history.
